On With Life was honored to receive the IHCA 2014 “Life Enrichment” award for the development of our OWL’s Nest Sensory Garden. The Life Enrichment award honors the creative and innovative measures taken by facilities to enhance residents’ lives. Facilities that have created or adopted an activity, publication or program that enriches residents’ enjoyment of life are invited to submit their entry.
There is no doubt that this award speaks to all of the hard work staff, volunteers, families and persons served have put into making the OWL’s Nest the beautiful, healing environment that it is today. The OWL’s Nest has truly become an amazing environment and as stated in our nomination letter, has become a very useful therapy environment - “Therapy staff can assist persons during treatment sessions to reap the benefits of horticulture, including physical activity, relaxation, skill development, intellectual and personal growth, social interaction, a sense of productivity, self-satisfaction and a spiritual connection with life. Therapists can challenge strength and balance, promote hand-eye coordination, range-of-motion, and endurance.”
Jeni Durfey and Cindy Friedrichsen accepted the award at the IHCA ICAL Annual Convention in Des Moines on October 1 (pictured).
