Sheri Gatchel - Volunteer

If you walk into On With Life's outpatient center in Ankeny on a Tuesday morning, chances are you will be greeted with a smile by Sheri Gatchel. Sheri’s role at the front desk of the clinic started
as a short-term volunteer gig in the spring of 2023 but has turned into a regular part of her week that she looks forward to.

Sheri’s daughter, On With Life employee Sara Wilson, reached out to her when On With Life's outpatient team was in need of front desk assistance due to a team member being on maternity leave. Recently retired, Sheri stepped in to help and quickly found how much she enjoyed her time there. Being a regular on Tuesday mornings, she sees the same individuals from week to week and is able to really get to know the persons served.

“I have heard some amazing stories during my time here,” said Sheri.

Being the mother of On With Life's development director, Sheri is no stranger to the inspiring things that happen at On With Life. For years she has attended events such as Celebrate Life, but this volunteer opportunity gave her more of a personal connection. She does a variety of jobs during her shift, from filing charts to stuffing envelopes, but the time she gets to spend sitting at the front desk interacting with staff and persons served are her favorite.

“I stick around because I enjoy it so much,” said Sheri. “I love being able to help a place that is helping so many people.”
